Celebrating David Castro’s Grateful Life

What A Long, Strange Trip It’s Been. . .

David Ross Anthony Castro passed away on Sunday, January 13, 2019, at age 70 after a short illness. His wife of almost 35 years, Marty, remained by his side as he battled respiratory failure. David’s daughter, Shannon Castro, son and daughter-in-law, Ben and Christine Castro, brought comfort to David along with numerous amazing nurses and respiratory techs at Northwest Hospital.

David was born in Phoenix, AZ on July 30, 1948, to Ross and Anna Castro. He is survived by his sisters Patricia (William) Byrne of Winchester, MA, and Victoria (Gary) Tiepelman of Scottsdale, AZ.  He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Annabel Crites and Barbara (Carl) Winters of Tucson, AZ.  His numerous nieces and nephews loved their Uncle Davey. Potz’s greatest joy came from his grandchildren, 8 year old Zane, 2 year old Cade and 1 year old Emma.

David came to Tucson in 1968 to attend the University of Arizona.  After graduating, he began his teaching career in 1973 in the Marana School District.  In 1982, David met Marty when she began teaching at Tortolita Jr. High.  It was instant love and they married in Guaymas, Mexico on March 30, 1984.  David retired from Marana Middle School in 2002 and was always proud of teaching civics and coaching baseball, soccer, and softball to over 4,000 Marana kids during his career.

Once he retired, David became a great househusband to Marty, caretaker to his grandkids, and lover of life.  He traveled to Las Vegas frequently to visit his son’s family. When in town, he could be found at his grandson’s school or at his favorite pub watching the Wildcats and his beloved San Francisco Giants with friends.  David never missed an opportunity to laugh and shared his enthusiasm with friends and strangers alike.

The family would be thrilled if you could join them to toast this wonderful, funny, crazy man.  A gathering will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2019, at 2:00 P.M. at the home of Barbara and Carl Winters.  Please come in your favorite U of A gear, Giants t-shirt, or as casual as you want.  You may contact Marana Mortuary for the address and directions or message Shannon Castro.  If you can’t make it, raise a glass for David Castro!
