Eulojia Vasquez Arredondo

Eulojia Vasquez Arredondo, 70, of Goodyear died June 18, 2015, in Goodyear.

Mrs. Arredondo was born Sept. 28, 1944, in Las Cruces, N.M.

She moved to Arizona in 1955.

She was a homemaker and member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Arredondo; one daughter, Veronica Arredondo; and one grandchild.

She is survived by five daughters, Irene, Rachel, Rebecca, Roberta and Virginia; one son, John; five sisters, Pauline, Vera, Benny, Daria and Maria; three brothers, Rey, Santos and Marcelino; and 12 grandchildren.

Services were held June 26 at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Goodyear.

Jerry Michael Buchferer

Jerry Michael Buchferer, 69, of Buckeye died June 15, 2015, in Goodyear from heart failure.

Mr. Buchferer was born June 20, 1945, in Bronx, N.Y.

He moved to Arizona in 2013.

He was an entrepreneur and owner of Hallmark Greeting Cards shops in Bronx, N.Y., Yonkers, N.Y., and Manhattan, N.Y.

He was a member of the Temple Emanu-El of Closter, N.J., where he was president from 2001 to 2003 and received the founders award in 2006. He was also a member of Chabad Jewish Center of Goodyear.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Buchferer of Buckeye; one daughter, Blake Buchferer of Buckeye; and one son, Brett Buchferer of Phoenix.

A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. July 12 at the family’s home.


Bill John Duke

Bill John Duke, 50, of Guadalupe and formerly of Avondale died June 22, 2015, in Guadalupe.

Mr. Duke was born May 24, 1965, in San Bernardino, Calif.

He was a chef.

He is survived by two daughters, Alisha Duke and Arminda Duke; his mother, Felipa Garcia; four sisters, Julia De La Rosa, Rose Duke, Gloria Mejia and Lupe Olivarez; three brothers, Lawrence Duke, David Duke and Kenneth Duke; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Guadalupe, 5445 E. Calle San Angelo in Guadalupe.


Marva Whipple Hoffard

Marva Whipple Hoffard, 80, of Mesa and formerly of Buckeye died June 24, 2015, in Buckeye from cancer.

Ms. Hoffard was born in Show Low.

She was a homemaker and member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

She is survived by one daughter, Amber Lynn Wiley of Buckeye; one son, William Clyde Hoffard of Mesa; one sister, Patsy Tedder of Vernon; two brothers, Pete Whipple of Mesa and Fred Whipple of Tempe; and one grandchild.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. today at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Mesa Vista Ward, 1430 N. Grand Ave. in Mesa.


Gilberto ‘Beto’ Orona

Gilberto “Beto” Orona, 72, of Avondale died June 23, 2015, in Goodyear.

Mr. Orona was born April 14, 1943, in Pecos, Texas, to Eusebio Orona and Modesta Orona.

He retired from Arizona Public Service in Gilbert and was an original member of the band, Los Hermanos.

He was also a member of St. William Parish.

He is survived by his wife, Paula; two daughters, Gloria Contreras and Mercy Duran; one son, Freddie Orona; one sister, Avelina Campos; three brothers, Matias Orona, Miguel Orona and Joe Orona; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at St. William Parish, 11025 W. Third St. in Avondale. A Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Friday at St. William Parish, followed by burial at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, 10045 W. Thomas Road in Avondale.

Michael Wayne Slusher

Michael Wayne Slusher, 59, of Buckeye died June 26, 2015, at his home from renal cancer.

Mr. Slusher was born Feb. 4, 1956, in Phoenix.

He worked for 18 years at Liberty Elementary, ending his time as district maintenance supervisor.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Terri of Buckeye; one daughter, Carlena Chavez of Buckeye; one son, Matt Slusher of Buckeye; and six grandchildren.

No services will be held.


Corrine Moore Threalkill

Corrine Moore Threalkill, 93, of Avondale died June 14, 2015, in Avondale.

Ms. Threalkill was born Sept. 7 in Nashville, Tenn.

She moved to Arizona in 1996.

She attended Nelson Mary Primary School in Tennessee, and then continued on to Napier School, Pearl High School and Tennessee State University before moving to Chicago. She received her master’s degree in child psychology from Governor State University in Park Forest, Ill.

She modeled for Johnson Publishing Company’s Ebony Magazine in Chicago, and started the South Shore Community Church Summer Camp and Youth Group program.

She was a teacher with Head Start for 30 years, and a member of the Gamma Phi Delta Sorority in Phoenix.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, George E. Moore Jr. and Frank Threalkill; one son, George E. Moore III; and one great-grandchild.

She is survived by two daughters, Paulette Smith and Tamara Avant Paulsen; two sons, Dennis R. Moore and Michael C. Moore; two grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. July 11 at Thompson Funeral Chapel, 926 S. Litchfield Road in Goodyear.

The Rev. Joe Charles will officiate.

Frances C. Villegas

Frances C. Villegas, 85, of Avondale died June 26, 2015, in Surprise.

Mrs. Villegas was born Feb. 24, 1930, in Los Lunas, N.M., to Antonio Chavira and Lupita Chavira.

She is survived by four daughters, Rosemary P. Villegas, Diane L. Cole, Dorothy E. Schmidt and Dolores M. Jackson; two sons, Pete I. Villegas and Robert W. Villegas; three sisters, Ramona Cohen, Mary Ann Poulter and Lourdes Lopez; 20 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were June 27 at Thompson Funeral Chapel in Goodyear. Committal services will be at 9 a.m. today at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N. Cave Creek Road in Phoenix.
